- Born November 1896. From Yamaguchi Prefecture. In October 1919, he passed the Higher Civil Service Examination in the Administrative category. Graduated in July 1920 from the Faculty of Law at Tokyo Imperial University (specializing in German law), and received a part-time posting to the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. That September, he formally entered the Ministry and was assigned to the Commercial Affairs Bureau. May 1921: Appointed Clerk for Agriculture and Commerce, and to Superintendent Section, Commercial Affairs Bureau. July 1922: Concurrent appointment as Councilor for Agriculture and Commerce, and to the Archives and Documents Section, Minister's Secretariat. December 1924: Marine Products Bureau, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. April 1925: Commissioner, Patents Bureau, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce; Commercial Secretary; and Archives and Documents Section, Minister's Secretariat. February 1926: Concurrent appointment in the Commercial Affairs Bureau, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. April 1929: Deputy Chief, Archives and Documents Section, Minister's Secretariat, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. June 1930: Commissioner, Temporary Industrial Rationalization Bureau, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce; Commissioner, Patents Bureau; and Mines Bureau, Secretary of Commerce and Industry. January 1932: Chief, Engineering Policy Section, Mines Bureau, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. December 1933: Chief, Archives and Documents Section, Minister's Secretariat, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce. April 1935: Acting Director, Engineering Bureau, Ministry of Commerce and Industry; and Manager, 2nd Department, Temporary Industrial Rationalization Bureau. May 1935: Director, Engineering Bureau, Ministry of Commerce and Industry; Manager, 1st Department, Temporary Industrial Rationalization Bureau; and Manager, 2nd Department of same. October 1936: Resigned positions at his own request, and appointed General Manager, Department of Business, Manchūkuo. July 1937: Deputy Manager, Department of Industry, Manchūkuo. March 1939: Deputy Director, General Affairs Agency, State Council, Manchūkuo; and Deputy Manager, Department of Industry. October 1939: Returned to Japan, took up post as Vice Minister of Commerce and Industry. October 1941: Minister of Commerce and Industry. April 1942 to October 1943: Member, House of Representatives. October 1943: Minister of State. November 1943: Concurrent post as Vice Minister of Munitions. July 1944: Resigned positions at his own request. Following Japan's defeat, in September 1945 held first in Yokohama and then at Sugamo Prison as a suspected war criminal. December 1948: Released from prison. January 1949: Auditor, Higashi Kagaku Co., Ltd. March 1950: Chairman, Tōyō Pulp Company. April 1952: Purge from public office lifted. March 1953: Joins Liberal Party. April 1953 to September 1979: Member, House of Representatives. November 1954: Secretary-General, Japan Democratic Party. November 1955: Secretary-General, Liberal Democratic Party. December 1956 to February 1957: Minister of Foreign Affairs. February 1957 to July 1960: Prime Minister. Concurrently served from February to July 1957 as Foreign Minister. August 1987: Passed away. Older brother Kishi Ichirō served as a vice admiral, younger brother Satō Eisaku would also serve as prime minister.
