- The origins of the Kobe University Library go back to the Kobe Higher Commercial School (prewar system) Library that was established in 1903. It preserves and provides the materials in its collection in its role as a library attached to an education and research institution. In addition to scholarly books and journals, it also maintains a large collection of rare items and books whose pedigree is connected with the city in which the university is located and from which it takes its name. Furthermore, since 1999 the Library has steadily been making these rare items and book available through its Digital Archive. Of particular historical interest is the collection of Documents on the Opening of the Port of Kobe through which one can get a glimpse of what conditions were like there in the 19th century when that occurred.
