- The Archives of Hokkaido was established in 1985 to provide a facility for collecting, preserving, and making available texts, recordings, and other materials related to the history of Hokkaido. The Archives’s collection includes approximately 60,000 official documents from the various administrative organizations responsible for the region ranging from the early 19th century Hakodate Magistrate (Hakodate Bugyosyo), to the Meiji-era Colonization Commission, to present-day institutions; approximately 50,000 documents related to companies, groups, and individuals who have played important roles in Hokkaido’s history; and some 130,000 paper publications including books that the Colonization Commission collected to serve as references for governing Hokkaido.
