- The Hokkaido Prefectural Library opened in Sapporo in 1926 as the “Imperial Visit Commemorative Hokkaido Government Library.” In April 1951, it was renamed the Hokkaido Library under the Library Ordinance. It relocated to Ebetsu in 1967 and has operated as the Hokkaido Prefectural Library to the present day. The library houses the “Northern Materials Room,” which collects materials related to Hokkaido and northern regions such as former Karafuto and the Kuril Islands.
