Explanation: 全国の警察事務を管轄した内務省の内局。1874年1月、司法省より移管するかたちで設置。一等寮。設置直後に定められた警保寮職制及事務章程では、行政警察に属する一切の事務を管轄するとされ、全国の警察事務を統括した。寮内の組織としては、同年2月には取調・府県・記録・職務・編輯・受付・往復・用度の8掛制を採ったが、翌3月には庶務・受付・記録・計算の4課制に移行、さらに同年9月には立案・書記・計算・受付の4課に再編された。1875年1月、囚獄懲役事務を所管。1876年4月、警保局に改称。
