Explanation: 蕃地事務都督とは、台湾出兵を指揮する役職である。明治六年政変後の台湾領有議論を受けて、1874年4月4日、「台湾生蕃処置取調」を命じられていた西郷従道が台湾蕃地事務都督に任じられた。都督には出兵に関わる全権が委任され、台湾処分について武力制圧・開化興起を目的と定めた「特諭」が示された。この特諭に基づき、同日、事務機関である蕃地事務局が設置された。
