Rozhestvensky, Zinovy Petrovich

Explanation
Born in 1848. Imperial Russian Navy officer. Born in Saint Petersburg. Joined the Imperial Navy at 17. Saw action in 1877 in the Russo-Turkish War. Appointed to London in 1885 as naval attache. Returned in 1894 to position with the Baltic Fleet. In 1902, appointed aide-de-camp to Czar Nicholas II. Promoted to chief of naval staff in 1903. In May 1904, appointed commander of the newly formed Second Pacific Squadron (commonly known as the Baltic Fleet), created to reinforce the Russian Pacific Fleet. Made vice admiral in October 1904. Set sail that month from Liepaja (Latvia) for 200-day voyage that ended in the Far East. Engaged in the Battle of Tsushima from May 27 to May 28, 1905, resulting in defeat at the hands of a Japanese fleet led by Togo Heihachiro. Rozhestvensky himself was wounded in battle and taken prisoner. After returning to Russia in 1906, resigned his post as chief of naval staff. Found not guilty in court martial. Passed away in 1909.
