Explanation
Born October 1837. From Satsuma Domain. Final rank was admiral. 1871: Fought in the Anglo-Satsuma and Boshin wars. Then, post-Restoration, served first as head of Kagoshima Domain's standing army and then as Commander, Kagoshima Detachment, Chinzei (Kyushu) Garrison. 1875: Vice-Director, 2nd Bureau, Army Ministry. 1876: Chief of Staff, Kumamoto Garrison. 1878: Chief of Staff, Imperial (Konoe) Guard. 1880: Commissioner, Tokyo Metropolitan Police, and Commissioner, Imperial General Staff Office. 1881: Superintendent, Tokyo Metropolitan Police. 1883: Senior Vice Minister (taifu), Navy. 1886: Director, Military Affairs Bureau, and Navy Vice Minister (jikan). 1890: Navy Minister. 1892: Advisor, Privy Council. 1894: Chief, Navy General Staff. 1895: Governor-General of Taiwan. 1896: Advisor, Privy Council, and Minister of Home Affairs. 1898: Minister of Education. 1904: Advisor, Privy Council. 1913: President, Education Research Committee (Kyoiku chosakai). February 1922: Passed away.
