Explanation
Born 1826 (Bunsei 9). From Morioka Domain. Father was domain physician Ōshima Kane'oki. 1842 (Tenpo 13): Traveled to Edo to study under Dutch medical texts translator Mitsukuri Genpo and Tsuboi Shindo. 1846 (Kōka 3): In Nagasaki, engaged in Dutch studies and learned about Western artillery, mining, and metallurgy. Together with Tezuka Ritsuzō, he produced Teko chūzō-hen, a translation of a Dutch technical manual on steel making. 1850 (Kaei 3): Returned to Morioka. 1851 (Kaei 4): Appointed Go-teppō-kata (firearms master). 1852 (Kaei 5): Assigned to Morioka daimyo's Edo retinue and studied gunnery. Developed the Kama'ishi iron mine. 1857 (Ansei 4): Succeeded in creating pig iron for the first time using a Western-style blast furnace. 1860 (Man'en 1): Appointed instructor at Bansho Shirabesho ("Office for the Study of Barbarian Books"). 1862 (Bunkyū 2): Took up position at the Hakodate magistrate's office. 1865 (Keiō 1): At domain order, opened the Kosaka silver mine. 1869: Received appointments to the new government (post-Restoration). Dai-jokyō, Bureau of Education (aka "The University"). 1870: Deputy Junior Secretary, Ministry of Industry. 1871: Appointed ITALICS Kōzan-suke (mines official). Participated in the Iwakura Mission attending the Ministry of Industry councilor, and observed mines around the West. 1875: Deputy Director (gon-no-kami) of Mines. 1876: Technical Director 1st Class, Ministry of Industry. 1877: Examiner, National Industrial Exposition. 1882: Director, Ani Mine and Kosaka Branch Bureau. 1883: Chief Technical Officer, Ministry of Industry; and Director, Ani Mine Bureau. 1885: Director, Sado Mining Bureau. 1886:Technician 1st Class, Ministry of Finance; Director, Sado Industrial Works; and Chief, Sado Mining Bureau. 1889: Technical Superintendent, Ministry of Finance. Went on to retain post with no duties. 1890: President, Japan Mining Association. 1892: Resigned. 1901: Passed away.
