Ishibashi Ayahiko

Explanation
Born December 18, 1853 (Kaei 6.11.18). From Kanagawa Prefecture. 1879: Graduated from the Imperial College of Engineering. 1880: Traveled to Great Britain to engage in lighthouse studies. 1883: After return to Japan, appointed Commissioner (Goyōgakari), Ministry of Industry. 1884: Gon-shōgichō, Ministry of Industry. Subsequent posts included Engineer, Kanagawa Prefecture; Vice-Director, Lighthouse Bureau, Ministry of Communications; and Engineer, Marine Navigation Beacon Control Center. 1887: Earned Bachelor of Engineering degree. 1892: Earned Doctor of Engineering degree. Following the First Sino-Japanese War, dispatched in June 1895 to Korea aboard the Ministry of Communications' lighthouse supply vessel Meiji-maru to survey locations for lighthouse construction. Studied locations along the shorelines of the Korean Peninsula. The following month, received concurrent appointment as Engineer, Temporary Taiwan Lighthouse and Navigation Beacon Construction Division. Carried out lighthouse construction in Kagoshima, the Nansei Islands, and Taiwan. 1898: Appointed Vice-Minister for Engineering, Ministry of Communications, and Engineer (Higher Civil Servant, 2nd Class), Ministry of Communications. November 1901: Dispatched to Korea to construct lighthouses. Work continued even during the Russo-Japanese War. February 1908: Retired.
