Explanation
Born 1849. From Yonezawa Domain. Also known as Uchimura Kōhei. Father was domain physician Uchimura Keigen. 1869: Enrolled in Keiō University. 1870: Enrolled in Southern College of the University (Daigaku Nankō, a school for Western learning). Later that year, appointed head of the College's dormitory (kosha). 1871: Appointed 9th grade official, Ministry of Education. Later that year, joined the Iwakura Mission as an aide to the Education councilor. 1873: Returned to Japan. Subsequently served in a variety of posts, including 6th grade official, Ministry of Education; Junior Secretary, Ministry of Education; and Commissioner (Goyōgakari), Tokyo Museum (predecessor to Tokyo National Museum). 1877: President, Tokyo School of Foreign Languages. 1885: Deputy Chief Secretary, Ministry of Education, concurrent with Commissioner (Goyōgakari), Tokyo Commercial School (predecessor to Hitotsubashi University). Later that year, resigned posts. Subsequently, worked around Tokyo's Hongō district as moneylender, etc. 1910: Passed away. Adoptive father of Uchimura Tatsujirō.
