Iwayama Takayoshi

Explanation
Born 1839 (Tenpo 10). From Satsuma Domain. Also known as Iwayama Naoki. Father was domainal retainer Iwayama Naokatsu. Cousin of Saigō Takamori. Served as page to Shimazu Nariakira. After Saigō's death, he held positions as ITALICS omotekata ri'in (a government official) and deputy commander of the Satsuma battalion. 1864 (Genji 1): Studied English under Ueno Kagenori. 1866 (Keiō 2): Passed cavalry course and became commander of cavalry company. After the Restoration, studied at Kyōritsu Gakusha (an English language school) and worked as a school official. 1871: Served as gonshō suiseki in the geography office at the Ministry of Popular Affairs. Dispatched to the United States to study agriculture. Later that year, apppointed kangyō tsukasa of the 5th rank, followed by kangyō shōsakan. Joined up with the Iwakura Mission as an attendant to the Ministry of Finance councilor, and embarked on inspections of agriculture and animal husbandry. 1872: Appointed Tariffs Shōsakan. 1873: Returned to Japan. Appointed Tariffs Ōtsuki, Industrial Promotion Section. 1874: Appointed Kangyō (industrial promotion) gonsuke and Chief, Agricultural Affairs Section, followed by post as official overseeing the establishment of sheep-farming businesses. 1877: Junior Secretary, Home Ministry. Administrative Official, Agriculture Promotion Bureau. Chief, Flora and Fauna Section. 1878: Chief, Flora and Fauna Section; concurrent with Director, Sōshu Sheep Ranch; concurrent with Director, Tokko Stock Breeding Farm. 1879: Concurrent with Chief, General Affairs Section; and Deputy Chief Secretary, Home Ministry. 1880: Chief, Land Products Section; concurrent with Director, Shimo'usa Stock Breeding Farm; concurrent with Director, Mita Breeding Station. 1881: Deputy Chief Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce, and Chief, Land Products Section. 1882: Director, Shimo'usa Stock Breeding Farm. 1883: Series of posts, including Director, Silk Reeling Consultation Council; Director, Agriculture and Commerce Bureau; Chief Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce; Secretary, Tea Industry Prize Show; and Secretary, Raw Silk, Textiles, Porcelain, and Lacquerware Prize Show. 1885: Concurrent appointments as President, Komaba School of Agriculture; and Commissioner (Goyōgakari), Imperial Household Department. 1886: Director, Agriculture Bureau; and Councilor, Genrō-in (Chamber of Elders). 1887: Governor, Miyazaki Prefecture. 1891: Governor, Ishikawa Prefecture. 1892: Passed away.
