Explanation
1914-1997. Thirteenth emperor in Vietnam's Nguyen dynasty, ruled 1926-1945. Sent to France in 1922 to receive his education, and succeeded to the throne in 1926 upon the death of the previous emperor, his father. Continued to reside in France after his accession, not returning until 1932. Became monarch over the Empire of Vietnam after a coup d'etat staged by Japanese forces stationed in French Indochina on March 9, 1945. However, this entity is said to have had little substance as an actual state. Amid the August Revolution that followed after the surrender of Japan's forces, he abdicated on August 25, 1945. Went into seclusion in Hong Kong in 1946, but in 1949 he was appointed head of state by France of a new pro-French puppet regime the State of Vietnam. However, in October 1955 he lost in an election to the US-backed Ngo Dinh Diem and went to spend the rest of his days in exile in France.
