Explanation
1886-1944. Leader in the Indian nationalist movement. Starting around 1908 took a leading role in the Bengal nationalist movement. Engaged in such acts as an attempt to throw a bomb at India Governor-General Charles Hardinge. Came to Japan in 1915 where he met Sun Wen (Sun Yat-Sen) then in exile. That October, the United Kingdom requested his extradition, and he took shelter at the Nakamuraya bakery in Tokyo's Shinjuku district. Thanks to his role in introducing Indian-style curry to Japan there, he is known in Japan as "the Bose of Nakamuraya." With the outbreak of the Pacific War, as president of the Indian Independence League he collaborated with Japan to form the Indian National Army (INA). However, he agonized over frictions between the Japanese Imperial Army and the INA, which wanted to guarantee its autonomy. He died in Japan in January 1944 not having seen India gain its independence. The role of leader of the INA had already been handed over to Subhas Chandra Bose.
