The discussions of the commercial treaty of 18th August 1853 should take place in connection with the treaties and treaty stipulations which led to modifications. This is in the first place a convention towards the conclusion of which the Netherlands gave her direct cooperation:the tariff convention of 25th June 1866 concluded by Japan on the one side and the Netherlands England France and the United States on the other.
